Live @ Chillits 2025

Chillits has been a yearly highlight since it began over 25 years ago, and it’s an honor to have played many times for a succession of exceptional stewards of chill who put their hearts into creating a magical space.

It was a joy to close again, a slot that allows for spanning a few different streams as it evolves from breakfast soundtrack to Heliosphan-induced group hugs. As with any live set (including Bar Miso Sundays), enough records were pulled to head in many directions. Nothing was sequenced in advance, although a couple of “must plays” were in mind, like the Terry Callier and Daniel Lentz cuts. (I’ve played the Lentz at Chillits before—a stunningly gorgeous composition—and repeated it in memory of his passing in July.)

Improvising on the fly can lead to odd turns, and I’ll confess to making one edit here, removing a misplaced track that disturbed the flow. A fine Ambient Jazz Ensemble piece, but one quickly cued as the outgoing record ended, and whose elision makes for a better memory, if intentionally hazed.
